CATBALOGAN, Samar – The captivating beauty and unrivaled wits of Miss Calbiga prevailed among 17 pretty Samareñas who slated their chances to be crowned as this year’s Mutya han Samar on August 9, 2004 in connection with the province’s 8th Samar Day celebration at the Samar Provincial Gymnasium.
Calbiganons took pride of their beautiful women, when the host of the pageant gala announced that Sharon del Castillo Sabarre, Miss Calbiga 2004, romped off the most coveted Mutya han Samar beauty title. Miss Sabarre was crowned by Samar governor Milagrosa T. Tan.
This year’s Mutya han Samar winner is a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies at the Ateneo de Manila University, who impressed the panel of judges with her straightforward answers during the interview portion that eventually gave her the edge over the other candidates.
Miss Calbiga stressed during the question and answer portion that, “stiff measures and bigger penalties” are the best solutions that can be imposed by the local government against environment offenders, and that could be achieved if they indeed wish to contain the flourishing environmental problem besetting the province.
Jackielyn Jabien of Jiabong was chosen 1st runner-up of the Mutya han Samar. She was also adjudged winner of the talent competition. She kept her audience at the spacious provincial gymnasium in awe of her astounding classical-ethnic interpretative dancing.
With the extraordinary performance shown by the candidates during the talent search held a day before the pageant night at Bossing Resto-bar here, the panel of judges took in their top five choices to re-perform their respective pieces for final judgment. Maureen Lonzaga of Zumarraga and Aubrey Barrios of Villareal landed 1st and 2nd runner-up, respectively in the stiffly contested talent presentation during the pre-pageant night at Bossing Resto-Bar last August 8
Other winners of the beauty competition are Ma. Cyndi Meniano of Catbalogan, 2nd runner-up; Apple Cruto of Basey, 3rd runner-up, who got the Miss Photogenic and Miss Congeniality awards; Lisbie Bisnar of San Jorge, 4th runner-up, who also won the Best in Swimsuit competition.
The pageant night was hosted by showbiz personality Alvin Alfonso. Mutya Han Samar 2002 Rhea Grims and Mutya Han Samar 2003 1st runner-up Janice Ibañez acted as anchorwomen.
The beauty and talent candidates began with an opening fanfare consisting of the Festival Costume and introduction of candidates with the Samar College Rayhak Dance Troupe. The Troupe also performed two other intermission numbers - “An Waraynon” and “Traysikol”.
Others lending romance and meaning to the night were the Genesis Dancers, Carla Picorro, and the SMCC HRM Students who did a number each. The SC strings gave a musical rendition while showbiz personality Jake Cuenca serenaded the candidates.
