Now that election fever is almost over, let's take a break and join me in giving a big hand and congratulating our fellow Samarnon, a Catbaloganon at that, who has made us proud time and again for bagging the excellence award for editorial cartooning in the recent Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) awards, Asia's premier publishing competition.

To quote the news, Artist Prudencio "Dengcoy" Miel Jr. of Singapore's Straits Times wowed judges with his cartoon depicting how Taiwan-China relations left Taiwan without an identity in the face of a much larger Chinese juggernaut.

Dengcoy was editorial cartoonist of The Philippine Star before migrating to Singapore more than a decade ago. He now has a daily local comic strip in The STAR titled "MacBayan," whose lead character Pen Ramas is a virtual alter ego of Dengcoy as Filipino woker at large in the global setting.

Truly this is one shining moment for us Samarnons and for all our kababayans who dreamt of making it big overseas in their own fields.

I hope our local officials will get the idea in honoring our overachieving townmates.

Alam mo Mr Bustamante dapat lang sila mag english lalo na kasama nila ang asawa nilang puti para alam ni puti ang sinasabi nang pinay at hindi si puti ang pinag-usapan nang mga pinay. Alam mo ang anak ko nag aral sa Philippines sa school nila kailangan english ang salita nila kahit sa playground. Kasi ang english ay kailangan natin din yan kahit hindi tayo mag abroad. At dito sa abroad nagtratrabaho ang pinay kasi nalulungkot din sa pinas. Yan ang hirap sa mga pinoy pag makarinig na na nag engilsh ang kapwa nilang Filipino hindi na maganda sa pandinig nila.

Mabuti hindi kita kasama sa eroplano di' nag english din ako, lalo na hindi nakaintindi nang asawa ko mag tagalong (ang mga anak ko konti lang ang alam). At 'wag mong sabihin na ang mga Pilipna ginagawa lang sila na tagahanapbuhay sa abroad. May mga kaibigan ako na walang mga trabaho, at sila nalang ang nag-alaga sa mga anak nila. Mr. Bustamante, can you imagine being out with Chinese friends and you are the only pinoy and then all of a sudden they start speaking in Cantonese? You will surely feel out of place, would you not? It’s proper and good etiquette to speak in English if you are with people other than Filipinos. Would it not be a considerate gesture to choose to speak the language that everybody would understand? I have live out of the Philippines more than half of my life time, and I surely have that the waray-waray accent in me. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having an accent. What is embarrassing to me is when people start talking in Tagalog in the middle of a conversation and with a group of foreigners around, that to me is extremely humiliating.

Furthermore, if western women work, why can’t pinays do? It’s an advantage to have a job. In times of crisis, we have something to fall back to and we are basically not just dependants of our husbands, and most significantly it gives us financial independence. Nothing could be better than that.

PPCRV failed to educate the voters in SAMAR... look who won in the elections... there was rampant vote buying... these indicates that their job was not successful... Never the less thank you for the effort, at least you have placed band-aid to the problem... The information dissimination is just like a band-aid solution... the decaying foul smell culture of the Filipinos when it comes to elections is still their... Eastern Samar Congressman elect Doloy Coquilla has been portrayed by the article posted by Cesar Torres (http://www.samarnews.com/news2007/may/f1175.htm) as a saviour of Eastern, Samar. I hope that when he is already inside the dungeon of trapo politicians that he will not be like them. Take note that Cong. Doloy is in the camp of the opposition, and we all know that funds are hardly released when you are on the other side of the fence. This may put him in very hot water, that may in turn make the dreams hoped by the writer and the rest of Eastern Samar lead to a total disappointment.

People should know that congress is a legislative arena, it makes laws and not make projects. People might think that because the saviour Doloy won that everything will come into order. Never expect that Eastern Samar will rise according to your expectations… Now DOLOY will have to play politics to gain access to the funds, this will be the start of him becoming trapo… TRAPO not because he is one, but trapo because that’s what the system wants from him.

I’ll ask you people of Eastern Samar, did Doloy not spend money like the rest (vote buying, gifts, dancing curacha… and all???) is he did then he is starting to be a trapo…. If not… big applause to him…..

Changing the faith of one’s district, province, city, town or barangay needs change of culture. The change that we want cannot be achieved by one person alone but by US… the people. Now if we put hope too much to the elected official, that’s not fair… they can just ¼ of the solutions, contribution of the people still has the big chunk of responsibility.

THE SAME culture… the same problem…. We need to change our outlook if we want change…. Do not depend so much on politicians… for even if we feel they are not capable of even doing harm to a fly, the system, coupled with the hidden agenda of friends and relatives…. in one way or the other will corrupt them… BELIEVE ME….

The National Citizens' Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) in Calbayog City and Samar Chapter expresses its heartfelt gratitude to all Namfrel volunteers, volunteers from the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPC-RV) and to all parishes in the Province of Samar, and the Social Actions Centers for Justice and Peace in the Diocese of Calbayog, for giving their time and effort for the successful conduct of the Operation Quick Count and for their efforts exerted towards an honest, orderly, credible and peaceful elections in Samar and Calbayog City.

The cityhood of Catbalogan maybe ill-concieved or premature at best for economic reasons and political immaturity. It has an insufficient tax base to support basic expenditure of a city as mandated by the city charter, taxing the business owners and employed citizens to the limit to meet its outlays that far exceed tax revenues. Other sources of revenues maybe not be forthcoming since they are arbitrarily allocated by the powers that be.

The city elders must be extremely creative to manage the city's financial affairs. Encouraging and supporting pledging businesses and employing jobless persons may alleviate the pressures of meeting the city's budget that's more likely to be in red. Reaching out to foreign investments in Samar where labor's cheap and resources are abundantly available is another. Tapping the lucrative moneys sent by Samarinyos working and living in foreign lands may also help.

As a city, Catbalogan may usher a new era of peace and prosperity in the region. Its leaders and citizens may reach maturity and achieve sophistications to run a shinning city upon Maqueda Bay.

Thanks for your message. Yes, I will help our co-Samarenos in their pursuit of a better life. I already started collecting books and materials for schools in Samar. As soon as I get back home this last week of June, I will get in touch with responsible school people in Calbayog and Catbalogan to partner with me so the materials will reach the schools "safe and sound".

The problem with our society is POVERTY. The problem of poverty is lack of opportunity for people to make an honest living. This honest living could not be realized because we lack the infrastructure. The infrastructure difficulty is due to stupid politicians who are in power. These politicians are elected by the masses. The masses in turn remain poor. And the cycle goes on and on and on and on.

What can we do? Yes, there are lots of things that we can do. IF PEOPLE WILL BE INDEPENDENT ENOUGH TO VOTE THE RIGHT PEOPLE IN OFFICE - without being herded by political leaders in their communities, without being dependent of doleouts of politicians, without selling their soul to corrupt officials for a mere Php 500 in exchange for the future of their children.

It is indeed a pity. Is there hope? Yes.

May ada waray kapalit, usa ako. And I have every right nga magsususon han mga opesyales han aton bungto. Kon gumasto man hira o napalit man nira an iba nga mga tawo. It is not a license to be corrupt and steal the peoples money. It is there fault too and it is illegal to buy votes. Kon papaki an han mo hira bangin waray ka mahibilngan nga napalit o pumalit, kay that is a violation of the election code.. However, even if it is true. Our right does not go away because she did win of vote buying, who did not do it anyway?

When they spend money for a person to vote, be it 3 pesos or more is vote buying already. What we can do is, ask our congressman, that in the next election it should be computerize and the campaign in every province and town, will use only one stage for both of the candidate. And the expenses must be shoulder by the government every candidate must not spend any money but for poster and propaganda of their proposal or projects that they want to offer, or the platform of governance that they want. I am very dis-appointed with the outcome of the elections. The time I've hered through GMA7 the wrong doings of the Governor I told myself… this is not the only instance that I've hered the allegations, in-fact I have known and read some documents proving the said accusations.... And I said how come the people still elected her to second term.... To my dismay she won again....

Should I be happy and congratualte her? or should I mourn?? probably mourn.... SAMAR's state is too bad... and her winning again is more than enough.... I cannot help but feel sorry for my relatives in there.... NAKAKA_AWA ang samar... ngayon pang dalawa na sila.... mas malaki na ang magagawa nilang MILAGRO... tama nga naman sa pangalan... palaging nagmimilagro sa maraming paraan...

Mga taga SAMAR... ganun ba talaga kayo ka T#N#A??? Nagpabili kayo?? sana naman magabago na kayo... kawawa talaga kayong lahat...

The way I see it, Mr. Torres was suggesting of a better mode of punishment for the offenders. In light with the current prison situation where inmates are dying of hunger - Mr. Torres idea is laudable and should be explored by the concerned government agencies.

Election is over. My special admiration to former district supervisor Anatolio C. Mendoza for running as Councilor of the Municipality of Sta. Margarita, Samar with little or no expense at all. This is in reference to the posting made by the good professor, Cesar Torres. His plan of soliciting funds to help defray the legal expenses of those hapless fishermen is another blunder on his part. How could he condone utterly illegal acts? Poverty and ignorance have been consistently used as shields to be exempted from the implementation of the law that prohibits anyone from killing endangered species. I think Mr. Torres should try to re-examine his views. They have become highly questionable lately.
