Suki Ygat-Segado, whose birthday celebration in San Francisco, California, became the excuse for the presentation of some very important materials concerning the struggle to preserve the Philippine rainforest in Samar as the legacy of the 87 million Filipinos last December 30, 2005, has informed us that more donations are pouring in.

In addition to the funds that have been given to Charo Nabong Cabardo which she will turn over to Fr. Cesar Aculan, and the Home for the Aged in Catbalogan, Samar, Suki promised that if the San Francisco-based Samarenos of California headed by Mr. Rolly Mungues of Guiuan and Cebu and the Samarena-blueblood from Calbiga, Gilda Cabrales del Pilar, the Samarenos Executive Vice President, will appropriate their assistance, the funds will go to the "Rainforest Fund".

The additional funds that she continues to receive even up to this time will be used to help the homeless children in Catbalogan who are sniffing rugby to assuage their hunger. The details are being worked out with some trusted people in Catbalogan.

Coming from Samar, then Southern California with the 21-year old and very slender and wispy and lovely Aina Nabong Samson as your driver in the midst of the storm, the wind, the rain, and the floods will be remembered for as long as the rainforest in Samar remain.

I took many pictures of you, especially at the Consulate, together with the Consul General, Ma. Rowena Mendoza Sanchez and her handsome escort, Mario, and children Isabel and Gabriel so that the future generations of Samarnons can tell the story of your courage, bravery and unselfishness, something of course which you have been doing with your life -- all for Pilipinas.

Addi Batica and hopefully Brenda Basiga will be adding more to our funds intended to protect the Philippine rainforest in Samar forever as a legacy for our people.

Many of us, especially Quint Doroquez, are eagerly awaiting for your return.

Thank you for your warm reception in San Francisco, despite the rain and the cold.

Although we missed the program at the Consulate, it was quite interesting meeting the Consul General and of course Quint whose life story I really admire.

I have been sharing his life story with my children and friends to serve as an inspiration for them.

The event organized by Suki and Lilly Ann was heartwarming.  I saw the intense attention of the people on our presentation.  Carlo said, he cried during my presentation.

Raffy Reyes was so moved, he gave $300 for our cause.  I will be sending the money together with the $200 you gave me to Fr. Cesar Aculan, the current president of the Samar Island biodiversity Foundation that is waging the legal battle against national policies that are inconsiderate of local situations and even destructive of our environment.

Suki's friends also gave $240 for the Home for the Aged in Catbalogan.

We left San Francisco the following day at 7 am.  There was pouring rain, the wind was cold and the visibility was very poor.  We passed by Carmel for a brief visit with some cousins, it was a bad time to be visiting.

We arrived in Los Angeles at about 6:30 pm after almost 12 hours of driving and just in time for New Year's eve.  It was the first time for my niece Aina Nabong Samson (21 years old and in her 3rd year at the University of Long Beach and daugther of Bebot and Tony Samson) to drive to San Francisco.  I was glad that my other niece, Julia Nabong Bendana (daughter of my sister Joy) came with us.  My daughter Lorena decided to come with us at the last minute together with her son, 3 year old Julian, our only male companion.  While they were frustrated by the weather, we were not able to go around San Francisco, they said that they learned more about Samar.

I left a copy of my presentation with Lily Anne for you.  Lily Anne suggested to convert it into a CD or DVD format so we will try to enhance it. I hope that we can do more fora to reach more people who will help us.

For now, I greet you all a happy new year.  May we all strive for unity to make our home, the island of Samar a prosperous land for our people.

I' m sure the members of SNS Class 64 will miss him a lot- he and his wife Lynn were always very kind, generous and warm-hearted to our "gang" - Fe Acampado, Ana Tan, Linda PIczon, Judge Cesar Mabansag and wife Yolly, Zenaida Laureta, Amparo Tan and all our classmates.  He will always remain in our hearts and will be remembered in our prayers.

News of Donding Bermejo's death comes as a shock. He was a high school classmate and friend. Last time I talked to him was during the Calbiga fiesta not too long ago. He seemed to be enjoying life in Saudi and told me how many more years he planned to work there before considering retirement.

I used to dance with Julie Borromeo back in the 1972/73 and joined CCP in 1974 but went to work in Saudi Arabia in '76 because the offer was too good to refuse being a fresh engineer back then. I doubt Odon Sabarre would remember me though because I was on my way out to CCP when he came back from US back then. But I'm confident MIKE UY would be able to describe me to him. Which brings to my reason of posting this message i.e. to get a contact details of Mike UY whom I'm sure would remember me.

I would appreciate if somebody can pass this message to him however possible. The last thing I know about him was, He finished his architecture and became a painter.

I used to dance with Fe Sala Villarica in Cebu from 1969-73 before I went to finish my engineering in Manila. Left Philippines 1976 and have worked and lived in 6 countries since then. I've work in Hartford, CT - GE office the last 5 years but was transferred lately to our Atlanta, GA office. To my surprise, while reading the Sunday newspaper I happen to noticed that Nicholas Pacana whom I used to dance with at CEBU was doing the " Nutcracker " for Atlanta Ballet but felt so guilty for not being able to watch it because I have to spend the holiday with my family in Scotland.
