To Girlie Grimaldi--- Thank
you for your suggestion but the venue here in the message board is
already enough for me to voice out my concerns and my ideas. The fact
that I am earning the ire of some is a good development. Sana makamata
ini hira nga baga nahuhubog hit ira ka kalipong kun hira ba waray or
langyawanon. If my written words were daggers, many have already died of
stab wounds but truth is difficult to accept.
To Samarenyo from Chi Town---
Thank you for your defense and I agree with you that we should not
forget our being filipinos or being warays. However, I wish not to
compete with my detractors based on wealth or mental might. To do so
will only be centering on our own selves without looking for what is
best for Samar and its people. I may not agree with what they say but I
agree to respect them how idiotic they may seem. In the end, people will
see who are here only to protect their names and who are here to advance
the interest of Samar and its people.
To Catbaloganon from NJ--- I
was laughing at how your winaraynon castigated my detractors. Sad to
note though that there are those who would not understand what you just
wrote but I'm glad that there are still some warays out there who can
still use that language with ease.
To Ed Solayao--- Thank you for
responding and I am looking forward for your return to Catbalogan. In
your return to Samar, I am happy to know that someone with your caliber
can contribute positively to the development of Samar. Your writings,
sir, are the best this message board has ever seen. I am one with you on
harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit of Samarnon. I am a believer that
we should not merely become employees but we should create employment
opportunities for others.
To Agitated Reader of San
Diego Zoo--- I am glad that you will stay in Manila Bay to contribute to
its decay. Let me say though that your hambog is stinkier than a dead
carcass floating in Manila Bay. A cretin like you is better sent abroad
than be allowed to stay in Catbalogan. Your 401-K or your IRA, Roth or
Traditional, will only help you heal your swollen ego. It must be unfair
for me to equate you to the critters in the zoo 'coz based on your
response, they are brighter than you. If I called you a langaw and you
were offended, my apologies, if you want to be a karabaw, go ahead. Just
be mindful though that there are elephants in San Diego Zoo bigger than
you!
To Sailorjohn--- I didn't know
that you could not understand my "winaray na patawa" or waray joke. You
better ask your wife to translate what I wrote so she will know that you
have been spending too much time in front of the computer than with her.
Ha ha ha! That's a joke, do not be offended! Let me try to translate
some things that I wrote about you. I said that your reaction to my
naming you Popeye was too "olive" (too girly---Gov. Arnie of Cali would
say). Olive is the love of Popeye the sailor man. When I found your name
in the message board, I was laughing that it rhymes with a song "Popeye
the sailor man, tot tot..." (Popeye the sailor John, tot tot)! I made it
all in jest just to lighten the situation here in the message board.
Your berating me was unwarranted as pointed out by two people from
Chicago and New Jersey. In fact, when you called me moron and
unintelligent, I only responded by making another joke saying that your
reaction was too "olive," meaning to too girly in Arnie's term.
Barraging me with you being somebody greater than me and more
knowledgeable than me was uncalled for. All I wanted was to watch what
you and Rex B. Cole (whom I nicknamed, again in jest, "Boy Tawas," "tawas"
being the undefeated armpit whitening and deodorant of the filipinos,
for having a name so funny that could mean Rexona for Rex and Cologne
for Cole) will say on the ongoing issue of foreign-funded tourism
ventures. You have called me things you wanted to call me but that is
okay because we are living in a democracy. In fact, I was laughing with
the latest reply of Rex B. Cole when he said "Ai, Ai, Sailorjon" because
that's what the Popeye cartoon would say. So, if you are offended with
my jokes, I apologize but next time do not use a hammer to swat a fly on
your forehead. By doing that, you are like using an atomic bomb to kill
one mosquito. Anyway, I already forgave you for the misguided missile
that you've launched against me and I am glad that you've promised to
clean the shores of Sto. Nino from plastics and trash

The Professor and the
Fisherman - the sequel:
Mmmmm...but Sir my friend, the
Professor answered, if you will do and follow my suggestions and
eventually become successful then you will be able to give jobs to your
community. You can create more revenue for the government to build your
roads and bridges, build more schools and etc.
To the Professor, fulfillment
is to be able to help, make his life count and make a difference.
However, contentment and
fulfillment are very relative and subjective. The choice is ours to
take.
Sankay Tonyboy, I know exactly
the point that you are trying to drive at. Joke din namin ito sa school.
Binalasa ko la just for the sake of looking at the other side of the
coin. I knew you know this very well too. An akon la basi ma-motivate an

With all the negative things
that have been complained about Samelco II, unbeknownst to many that it
has been receiving some regional and national awards as among the top
electric cooperatives in the country for rural electrification. Its
rural electrification program has surpassed the targets set by the
National Electrification Administration.
Now, I know one person in the
Samelco board who has been the people's voice on this similar concerns.
I will forward this message of yours to that person and hopefully
Samelco will take action on your complaint.
Thank you for your complaint!

The story that I wanted to
share was not complete when published but here's the full story...
Let me share to you a story
about a Harvard professor of business who was studying how he could
economically transform a fishing village in Northern Quintana Roo in
Mexico. As part of his immersion so he could understand the life of a
lowly fisherman, he stayed for a week with a fisherman's family. He
observed that during the weekdays, the fisherman has a routine. At 6:00
a.m., he would wake up and go fishing. At 9:00 a.m., the man would
return from his fishing expedition and would sell a portion of his catch
in the public market while reserving another portion for their own
consumption. Before noontime, the poor fisherman returns from the public
market with some goodies for his children and some other household
necessities. After eating a hearty lunch, the poor fisherman would
retire for a siesta that normally last until 3:30 in the afternoon. Upon
waking up from his daily siesta, he would have a group of friends
singing, chit-chatting, and drinking some locally-concocted wine until
the wife invites the man for his dinner. At 8:00 p.m., the man retires
for a good night's rest. And the routine goes on and on during weekdays.
So, the professor, after a week of observation, told the fisherman to
change his routine to attain economic prosperity. He told the man to
wake up earlier at 4:00 a.m. and fish for 8 hours or until 12 noon.
Then, sell the catch the whole afternoon. If he will do these, according
to the professor's computation, the fishermen will be able to buy more
fishing boats and even hire his drinking buddies in just a span of 5
years. When he will have more fishing boats, he needs to pursue a degree
in business so he could manage his fishing corporation that will be
exporting fish all over the world. Then at 75, he could retire and fish
for a little while, work a little to manage his business, have a siesta
as long as he wants, sing and drink with friends in the afternoons, and
retire to bed at 8:00 p.m.
The poor fisherman was
astonished at the suggestion of the professor and asked him: "Sir, do
you mean to say that I have to do all that so I can enjoy whatever I am
enjoying right now?"
The moral of the story: We
can't keep on chasing our tails because we don't have. Most often than
not, we tried our best to obtain material things not knowing that
material things would not satisfy us. The best things in life are not
things. They are families, friendships, sense of humor, music, love,
peace of mind, beauty, and health. They are not quantified by your
degrees and your bank deposits, they are measured in terms of how
fulfilled you are with what you have how little it may be.

Girlie,
What part of NYC do you live
in? I was born in NYC and lived there till age 21. I don't miss it one
bit as NYC is not a place to raise children.
Samarenyo, Chicago
Thanks for your comments. It
takes more then just an IQ test to show how intelligent a person is or
is not. Common sense comes into play also in everything we do daily. I
have seen some very smart people that when it comes right down to the
facts, their lack of common sense shows how stupid they really are.
As for your comment
"saint-turned-devil". I'll not got there with you or any others on here.
I can take anything a person can dish out there Samarenyo. The point
that I made was that I was not going to be push into an argument with
Rex based on Tonyboy's little remarks if you have read them.
After thinking about what I
have read here over the past months, I decided to step in and add some
thoughts I had. But I see that maybe I should have stayed in the back
ground and watched the back and forth banter between the battle of the
mindless.
Troy I agree was off the
handle in regards to his remarks against Tonyboy and the same goes for
Tonyboy. Correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe this message board
was for those who wanted to communicate with family and friends.
I will agree that the posting
that Mr. Tonyboy Morales contributes are for the better of Samar and his
points of view are understood.
So in closing, I'll return to
being a fly on the wall and continue to see the meaningless banter that
goes on from time to time. Trying to provide some input from my
prospective without the "patawa" from some will just stay with me.

Tonyboy: With regard to your
list of suggestions, I find suggestion #5 to bring immediate and broad
effect to respective families of scholars who will graduate and find
job. Probably we can set guidelines and mechanics as to who will qualify
to be recipient of this program.
Maybe we need the following:
- persons who will administer
this foundation
- list of people who signified to become donors/sponsors
- come up with the name of the foundation
- register this foundation
- etc.
As regards to Cooperatives, I
am really keen on putting up one as this will generate immediate
employment to our folks. This might need big upfront cash outlay but if
everyone who is willing to help will contribute, then this is not an
impossible endeavor. All we need is a good feasibility study of whatever
project we will plan to put up.
Frankly, I am counting on
Tonyboy to spearhead all of these. I find him trustworthy and very much
capable to head these projects. I just don't know however if there be
other readers who will jump in and join this bandwagon.
I am challenging everyone to
put your concerns into action.

To Antonio Moral-less:
This is a point-by-point
response to your insulting (of course) and condescending (naturally)
piece of 7/29/08. This will be my last posting to this forum because
trading barbs and insults with one who thinks he's a demigod, who
assumes people will just accept anything that he says, would be
counter-productive and a complete waste of time.
First of all, my family and I
live in the hills of Poway, but your brothers from SDZ, Cheetah and that
creature of the order Ophidia, say hi to you.
Secondly, I don't look down on
people of Catbalogan. That's the town where I grew up and went to school
so I'm a blue-blooded Catbaloganon through and through. I don't know if
you are. You always put a spin on everything people say. Well, I guess
that's what self-proclaimed pundits do, so I don't really care.
Thirdly, I assure you I'm not
a paycheck away from bankruptcy. If you know money management and take
advantage of 401 and 457 plans, prepare yourself for retirement and make
some wise investments, you don't have to be a Bill Gates or Warren
Buffett to be financially independent. I can say with absolute certainty
that my balance sheet is healthier than yours.
I have strong ties to
Catbalogan and was even thinking of buying a vacation home there and
give back to my old school and community. But if I have to co-exist with
people of Moral-less's kind, I'd be better off watching the Manila Bay
sunset, instead of Maqueda Bay.
Now that I have caught his
attention, I hope things would change for the better. I remain.

Finally, I've read good ones
now, & Mr. Morales’ proposition on how to help rebuild Samar is indeed
worthy of welcoming. Like he said, there are countless more ways of how
we can give back to our beloved homeland.
Although, I would beg to
disagree with the notion that OFW's like me who found greener pastures
abroad tends to "forget our people". I, for one, was just a plain victim
of the economic downturn during the late 1990's, forced out to find a
living here in the Arabian desert (by the way, Saharan desert is in
Africa). Working abroad, for me & for many, is just a temporary respite,
& the quickest way to earn & save for a better future for our family, &
our country as well (just look at how much impact the OFW remittance has
in our very unstable economy).
But it doesn't mean that I
already disregarded my Waray-waray heritage. The truth is, I've always
been looking forward to the day when I'm able to share back what I have.
It's been in my plans to really do my share once I finally decided to
quit working abroad (which is to the end of this year 2008,
God-willing). This may sound so lofty, but I've already been reaching
out to some friends & colleagues back home & we are now on initial
stages of planning for future ventures there. How I hope that when I’m
back there in the Philippines, I will be able to meet people like Mr.
Morales and many others so we can share our visions, find common ways
where we can put our plans into realities, & be able to help uplift our
already-sunken beloved land.
It’s already a common
knowledge that the root cause of these problems is poverty as a result
of poor governance, corruption, & for a part, lack of will on us people
(ourselves). It’s a shared responsibility, isn’t it? How can we point
fingers to some inept leaders when we are the ones who elected them?
Like I said earlier, the proper way of resolving problems is by going
back to root causes, get rid of it, & put preventive measures in place
so it won’t recur again. How can we cure this disease?
Endowments, charities, &
subsidies are but interim short-term reprieve. Long-term ways to
alleviate poverty includes, foremost, enhancing economic activity within
the locality so that people will have the capacities to earn for living
& spend for at least their basic needs. There is a great saying, “Give
man a fish & you feed him for a day; teach him how to catch fish & you
feed him a lifetime.” If I may add to Mr. Morales’ suggestions, let’s
promote entrepreneurship from the grassroots all the way up to the top
of our society. Best of all, let’s re-focus our attention towards
uniting our ideas rather than breaking up. LET’S BE CONSTRUCTIVE FROM
NOW ON. We have had so much of bickering that we seem to be turning
apart. We all have one common enemy. Why not fight it back as a united
front rather than self-destruct?
The recent suspension of some
incompetent government officials is good news that there is still light
at the end of the tunnel. We simply cannot give up hoping that good
still prevails over evil. But with every hoping, there must be an equal
pragmatic approach to realize it. We cannot just sit back & watch; each
one has responsibility to partake. There are so many Catbaloganons &
Warays abroad who are willing to give their share. We may not see them
in flock going home right away, but they are just waiting for
trustworthy ones to lead them & make their contributions as well in
whatever way or form.
Just this morning, I read a
news here in Samarnews.com about the recent participation of celebrity,
Mr. Boy Abunda of ABS-CBN, in promoting Eastern Samar’s tourism
potentials. Isn’t that a great example? Samar has many resources that
it’s simply deplorable to consider being among the poorest area in the
Philippines. There is no excuse whatsoever. The province has bountiful
natural resources, great spots for ecotourism, talented populace, &
influential individuals. There is even no need to adapt
industrialization to fast-track economic development as it has adverse
effects on the environment. There is just so many ways we will run out
of space enumerating them.
Mga igkasi ko Samarnon, let’s
put our acts together & move on. There is no place for laggard mentality
in this fast-pace world. While we are good airing our complaints, why
not ask ourselves first what we can do about it? Isn’t that the
constructive way?

Mr. Morales,
If you want to converse with
me, then I think it would be nice if you would talk in a common language
so I can have a complete understanding of what you are saying to me.
If you or anyone on here can
translate this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Wasn't Popeye

]
I am not asking you TB to be
cowed by me, grow up. Did I hurt your feeling?
I could easily have asked my
Asawa what you had said here, but decided I did not want her to get
involved in an argument with you as for sure, she would put you in your
place.
Come on now Mr. M or Tonyboy,
how ever you want to be addressed. Don't be so naive in your approached
to communicate with me. Step on up and say what is on your mind. Don't
hide now, speak up.
As my Asawa has told many
times, there are those Filipinos for whom live overseas, away from the
Philippines that for what ever reason FORGET the Philippines. Sad to say
that is so true as I see it here alot. I have no idea if you actually
live in Catbalogan or maybe live outside the Philippines. But it seems
to me that maybe, just maybe you that you may be one of those Filipinos
who has a problem with Filipinos who marry outside of their culture. I
hope that is not true as you seem to be a person who has not mentioned
any comments about that.
Now in regards to your post on
what WE can do to help Samar. Your suggestions are well listed. It is a
fact that many Filipinos who live outside of the Philippines in other
countries have a better life then if they lived in Samar. I agree that
even though they live some where else, they also might just be making
ends meet from pay day to pay day, but still they can do somehing to
help Samar.
I for one help our family both
from a far and when we are there. Our plan once we retire there is to
help in the schools with volunteering and talking with the students,
providing assistance when we can, provide financial help to the family
for education and college. In the past, I have provided school books for
the school on Sto. Nino. I know many families that go back to the
Philippines and provide a lot of help to their families and to other
areas that they can.
Providing support to Father
Labendia via the Diocese of Calbayog is a good idea. But you need to
provide a better system where people can provide money. Sending a check
via the mail in the Philippines is not exactly safe even today.
In the end here as Rex said,
we ALL have an interest in making Samar a better place to live for all.
I think as I posted before, sites like these are not for people to make
off the wall remarks about anyone. All it does is create hatred and
arguments. If you want to keep making remarks about popeye, olive oil,
the Marines, etc, I would suggest that maybe you need to take a look in
the mirror and ask your self is making comments like this helpful to the
discussions on here?

Just to let you know that I
enjoy reading your write-ups. I think your well-reasoned articles are
fine pieces of literature and your insight into Samar's woes and dirty
politics and politicians is commendable. It would be wonderful if you

Boy Abunda and Eastern Samar's
Tourism Future
Boy Abunda, celebrated talk
show host and talent manager, can ably lend a hand to promote the
tourism potentials of Eastern Samar. Governor Evardone is brilliant in
asking a native estehanon to promote what is best in Eastern Samar.
Fronting the Pacific Ocean, Eastern Samar could be a great surfing
capital that would rival Siargao in Surigao and the pristine beaches in
Guiuan could rival that of the top beaches in the other parts of the
Philippines.
While it is true that tourism
can spur development in an area, we should exercise some caution as
verbalized by Rex B. Cole so we don't end up the losers. Boracay has
been so overdeveloped that in the long term the ill-effects of mindless
development will erase the positive impacts it brought.
Bohol, the number 1 tourist
destination in the Philippines, should serve as the model for other
provinces in developing their tourism industry. When I was in Bohol in
1996, my first visit, the city of Tagbilaran has only a handful of
hotels and tourist amenities, the roads going to Panglao and to Baclayon
and to Carmen were all in state of disrepair. The team of Gov.
Relampagos and Vice Gov. Chatto were instrumental in heavily investing
in the road networks that would connect the vital tourist destinations
of Bohol. Even when Gov. Aumentado and Vice Gov. Herrera took over, they
have continued the vision started by the Relampagos-Chatto tandem for
Bohol to become the tourism capital of the Philippines.
I remember having a chat with
then Vice Gov. Chatto (he is now congressman of the first district and
may soon run for governor in 2010) in his office and he told our group
that their vision of making Bohol the number 1 tourist destination is
gaining support from all sectors. The business sector is providing the
needed hotel beds and restaurants for incoming tourists, the municipal
governments are identifying tourist destinations in their own turfs and
providing the necessary infrastructure by constructing roads so they be
connected to the Bohol Circumferential Road, the provincial government
is leading the way to promote Bohol as a tourist destination in
collaboration with the Department of Tourism, the three congressmen have
set aside their political differences and have gone to Malacanang to ask
or beg from the president to have the Bohol Circumferential Road a
reality and have allocated sizeable portion of their pork barrel for
road and bridge constructions, and the boholano expatriates who are all
over the world are helping by visiting Bohol and becoming the # 1
salespersons by telling their friends to visit their island province.
I came back in 1997, 1999,
2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and this year and I saw
how Bohol was transformed and is continuously transforming as the best
destination. If you haven't been to Bohol because you are used to
hearing about Boracay and Baguio, you should try going there because
there are so many things that we could learn from the descendants of
Francisco "Kikoy" Dagohoy and Rajah Sikatuna.
We may rival the bounty of
tourist destinations in Bohol and we can certainly learn a lot from
them. Their riverboats in Loboc can be replicated in Calbiga, Sohoton in
Basey, and Gandara. Their Balicasag dive sites can be in Marabut. Their
man-made forest can be in the natural forests inside the Samar Island
Natural Park along the Taft-Buray Road. Their Panglao beach can be in
Calicoan. The caves in Calbiga, according to cave enthusiast Joni
Bonifacio from Catbalogan, is most likely the biggest cave network in
the Philippines or in Asia but no one is noticing that. Blanca Aurora is
diffinitely pretier than Bohol's Mag-aso Falls or that the cold waters
of Kinabut-an are certainly better than swimming in Hinagdanan cave in
Panglao. There are so many potentials but they are left behind because
the leaders in government are more centered on keeping their bank
accounts fatter than making the future of Samar more secured.
Going back to the Eastern
Samar lead in tourism, I hope that its benefits will truly trickle down
to the enjoyment of the people of Eastern Samar and hopefully to its
neighboring sister provinces – Samar and Northern Samar.
Good luck Gov. Evardone and
Boy Abunda!

I find it amusing that people
who are charging Tonyboy Morales of sarcasm are even worse than him.
Case in point is Troy of USA. He is not only sarcastic but you read his
hot temper in his writings. Another saint-turned-devil is Sailorjohn of
Washington. How could he so easily be offended by a "patawa" of Morales
calling him Popeye. When he answered back calling Tonyboy moron, he is
more guilty than the latter. Troy's calling him Popeye was in jest but
only small minds can't think aloud so he thought that it was an attack
on him. How can he call Morales not intelligent. My goodness, if there
is an IQ test conducted on both of them. I am sure that "popeye"
Sailorjohn will fail to surpass the IQ of Morales 40,000 miles. I tried
to read and compared the writings of Morales and Sailorjohn and found
that the former has more substance than the latter. Meaning, Morales is
more intelligent than Sailorjohn.
To Agitated Reader, you are so
brazen and so out-of-this-world when you attacked Morales. You see, your
attacks only boomeranged on you. You not only attacked Morales but the
entire legion of journalists. Hey, Agitated Reader please be mindful
that you are not the richest man here on Samarnews.com so please stick
to the issues at hand without resorting to belittling the writings of
another because again comparing your writings with that of Morales they
pale in comparison.
I thank Samarnon of Canada for
trying his best to put order in this chaotic message board but you could
truly see who has the edge in terms of advancing the true issues of
Samar. Others are merely scratching the surface but Morales and some
honest-to-goodness warays have Samar's interest in their heart. You
could smell that in their writings. When others are only protecting
their names, Morales and some meaningful warays are pushing the best for
Samar.
Again, it is amusing to see
what we all could offer to Samar. Thank you Morales for reminding us
that we should never forget our identity as a people and thank you
Samarnon from Canada for that moderating voice. I wish not to thank
those passersby in Samar who think that they now own Samar and its
people's minds just because they are superior than them. Now, Samar has
a champion who will advance the true interests of Samar and its real
people and who is ready to fight it all out to against foreign
aggressors and those with colonial mentalities.
