overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), would-be OFWs and the public to avoid of
being victimized and defrauded by text, phone and e-mail scams perpetrated
by nefarious syndicates here and abroad, isang kababayan natin ay nadinggoy
by these nefarious syndicates from Africa kamakailan lamang.
Noong nakaraang Miyerkules,
I watched the TFC (The Filipino Channel) here in Riyadh, the TV Patrol has
featured a Filipino woman who was hoaxed by an email scam. Itong kababayan
natin ay naniwala agad na siya ay nanalo ng isang milyon US dollars, sa
isang lottery draw kung saan ang kanyang email address ay siyang ginamit ng
mga hinayupak na mga sindikato mula sa
Africa. Pinalabas
na siya ang winner sa nangyaring internet draw at nakolektahan siya ng higit
three thousand US dollars bilang bayad to process of her claims na agad
naman n’ya ipinadala sa kanila as US draft cheque. Tapos sumunod another
request sa kanya na magpadala uli siya ng four hundred US dollars, para daw
sa Anti-Money Laundering. Sa pagkakataong ito doon lang si kabayan nagising
na siya pala ay nadinggoy na at iyon nga she was interviewed by ABS-CBN.
Paalaala lang higit sana
tayong maging aware laban sa mga text messages, phone calls at email scams.
May natanggap narin akong mga emails na katulad nito na ako raw ay nanalo sa
isang lottery internet draw using my email address ginamit pa nila si Mr.
Bill Gates and the Sultan of Brunei. O baka naman kasabwat ang dalawang ito?

Island.
I believe the opposite. Logging means destruction of forest and farmland and

I've earned my bachelor's
degree at CHRIST THE KING COLLEGE IN 1993. I have taught in CABACUNGAN
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL for one year, and 2 years in MAG-UBAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

As far as the San Jose
timber license is concerned, it is no longer important whether or not there
are tribal minorities living there. What is more important is that the
license is cancelled or made inoperable because allowing the cutting of the
trees there is bad for the country. I could not care less whether or not the
company is owned by Sen Enrile. For all I care it could be owned by the
pope, himself, or St. Michael, the archangel. I will still object to any
attempt to operate it because it is the only remaining old growth forest in
that part of the country. I hope that the authorities would for once in
their lives see that profit in their pockets is not the only measure of
good. The quality of life of people is perhaps a more basic indicator of
what is good.

This is just very sad, to say the least.
While there is so much
instability in the country today, people begging, people dying, people
lying, people marching, people being killed just because they happen to
oppose the powerful people, and we don't know if there is going to be a coup
d'etat, a "strategic stalemate", an honest to goodness revolution, or a
peaceful transition in power through the "constitutional process", here they
are just wanting to get rich at the expense of our legacy.
There should be a moratorium
on all these get-rich-quick schemes of the greedy, the plunderers, the
blood-suckers, the incompetents, the heartless until things have settled
down and a more credible consensus among the peoples who are going to be
profoundly affected by the exploitation of our natural resources can come
out with a more rational position concerning our legacies and our heritage.
It is terrible that these
powerful people are glossing over the 8,000 Leytenos and Samarnons who
perished in Leyte several years ago; of the 1,600 who died in Quezon,
Aurora, Nueva Ecija; of the several hundreds who died in Southern Leyte; of
those who died in Samar all because of floods, landslides.

Tribe in Caraga opposes logging operation
DAVAO CITY (Mindanews/28
November) - The Councils of Elders (Mangkatadong) of the Mandaya tribe in
Caraga, Davao Oriental are opposing the impending operation of the Matugina
Integrated Wood Products Inc (MIWPI), claiming its operations could
encroach on their ancestral lands.
The Sangguniang Bayan of
Caraga also passed a similar resolution, in support of the Tribal Councils'
resolutions.
The firm is reportedly now
ready to operate in the mountain ranges of Sangab in Caraga, Davao Oriental
and the neighboring indigenous cultural communities covered by Certificate
of Ancestral Domain Claim (CADC) 108.
MIWPI is a holder of Timber
Licensing Agreement (TLA) No. 354, issued on March 30, 1983 and set to
expire in 2008. But its TLA was suspended in 1987 due to "violation of the
terms and conditions of its license, particularly on the poor performance in
reforestation activities."
In 2001, however, Al Rashid
Ishsmael, Forest Management Bureau Director, recommended the lifting of the
suspension order.
In separate resolutions, the
tribal councils of Sangab, Panlaisan, Sobrecarey and San Pedro in Caraga
cited in their protest the alleged violation of indigenous rights,
environmental destruction and disturbance to their security and way of life.
"Free and Prior Informed
Consent (FPIC) was not obtained from the concerned indigenous cultural
communities (ICCs)," says Norma Gonos, a Mandaya who served as former
commissioner of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP).
Gonos helped draft the
Ancestral Domain Management Plan (ADMP) that defines the need for the
tribe's consent in implementing development projects of government and
non-governmental organizations.
An administrative order of
the NCIP itself requires the conduct of an FPIC.
"We have been working hard
to maintain our cultural integrity, the richness of our culture, our
interrelation with environment and our responsibility to the ancestral
domains which we borrowed from our generations to come," declares Kagawad
Eutiquio "Dodong" Pagsac Jr., chair of the Committee on Environment of
Caraga.
He said the firm's presence
in the area is a "threat to the peaceful, bountiful place and the culture of
the indigenous peoples."
The tribe declared in its
ADMP that "the trees are not ours, this is part of Magbabaya's creations
entrusted to us thus, we will not cut more than what we, earnestly need."
The ADMP was formulated upon
the issuance of CADC 108 in 1998 by the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources.
The tribe has a pending
petition with the NCIP for conversion of their CADC into a Certificate on
