8ID neutralizes 14 NPAs, seizes 15 firearms in a relentless month-long operation in N. Samar

Dignified burial of the two killed CNTs given by 8ID

By DPAO, 8ID PA
August 28, 2025

CAMP LUKBAN, Catbalogan City – In no less than 30 days, the 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division has unleashed decisive blows to the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC), yielding a total of 14 Communist New People's Army Terrorists (CNTs) neutralized and seizure of 15 low and high-powered firearms in a series of Focus Military Operations (FMO) across Northern Samar.

The momentum began on July 31, 2025, in a major government-initiated two successive encounters in Barangay San Isidro, Las Navas, Northern Samar against the Regional Headquarters, EVRPC. The clashes resulted in eight CNTs killed, with four of whom were Communist-Terrorist Group (CTG) high-value individuals, the surrender of one personality, and the seizure of 10 high-powered firearms, which significantly degraded the operational and armed capabilities of the EVRPC.

In the following weeks, on August 24, 2025, three more CNTs surrendered to the government forces of the 78th Infantry (Warrior) Battalion, choosing peace and reintegration programs over a life rooted in deception and lies of the CTG. They also handed over to the government one caliber 45 pistol and one 9mm pistol. Their decision to lay down their arms was fueled by hardships with the loss of mass support in the armed struggle of the Communist Party of the Philippines- New People's Army- National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF).

Major General Adonis Ariel G Orio, Commander of the 8ID, stressed that the surrender of the CNTs is a victory of peace and the growing trust and confidence of the people in the Philippine Army.

"While we continue to strike hard against the remnants of the EVRPC, we also strive even harder to welcome those who choose to surrender and return to the folds of the law. This dual façade that the 8ID represents ensures that no one is left behind in our pursuit of lasting peace in Eastern Visayas," Maj. Gen. Orio stated.

The sustained operational momentum has led to another encounter on August 27, 2025, when forces of the 78IB clashed against 10 armed members of the Squad 2, Sub-Regional Guerrilla Unit (SRGU) Laysan, Sub-Regional Committee (SRC) Arctic, of the EVRPC, in the uplands of Barangay San Jose Mapanas, Northern Samar. The encounter lasted for an hour of intense firefight, which resulted in the killing of two CNTs and seizure of two M16 rifles along with other war materiel.

The killed CNTs were identified as Motaw Ortazo, alias "Ibaro" of Barangay Magsaysay, Mapanas, and Edwin Verano, alias "Sammy," a resident of Barangay Senonogan, Silvino Lobos, Northern Samar.

In keeping with the Philippine Army's adherence to human rights and International Humanitarian Law (IHL), the 8ID ensured the dignified burial of the two killed CNTs. Moreover, 8ID has coordinated with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Mapanas for any assistance for the bereaved families, affirming its commitment to upholding respect for human dignity even in times of conflict.

"Even as we pursue justice for the countless victims of the insurgents' atrocities, we remain steadfast in upholding human dignity. By facilitating a proper burial, we hope this also serves as a message to their comrades that there is still a chance to return to their families, abandon the armed struggle, and live peacefully," Maj. Gen. Orio added.

He subsequently condemned the deception and false ideologies of the EVRPC that have corrupted the lives of the innocents and hindered peace and development in Eastern Visayas.

"The 8ID will remain relentless in its mission, and it will not stop until every armed member is laid to rest either by means of surrender and reconciliation, or through the fate they choose in battle," Maj. Gen. Orio articulated.

This operational achievement forms part of the continuing campaign of the 8ID to end the EVRPC decisively, foil the resurgence of their influence in Eastern Visayas, and ensure a new era of lasting peace.

Meanwhile, the 8ID, together with partner stakeholders and local government units, reiterates its call on the remaining CTG members to lay down their arms and avail the National Amnesty Program under the Enhanced Community Local Integration Program (ECLIP) and embrace the path of peace and reintegration into mainstream society.

August 27, 2025

CAMP LUKBAN, Catbalogan City – Troops of the 8th Infantry (Stormtroopers) Division engaged in a fierce encounter against ten members of the Communist-Terrorist Group (CTG), in the hinterlands of Barangay San Jose, Mapanas, Northern Samar, resulting in the neutralization of two Communist New People’s Army Terrorists (CNT), and the seizure of two high-powered firearms on August 27, 2025.

The encounter transpired during a Focused Military Operation (FMO) after reports from concerned residents revealed the presence of armed individuals belonging to the Squad 2, Sub-Regional Guerrilla Unit (SRGU) Laysan, Sub-Regional Committee (SRC) Arctic of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC), who were conducting extortion activities in the area.

The clash ensued to an intense firefight where government troops outmaneuvered the CNTs, hence, later forced them to withdraw leaving two dead CNTs behind and forcing the rest to flee in disarray. The 8ID is currently conducting cross-investigation to identify the two CNTs, one of them was identified as Motaw Ortazo alias “Ibaro” of Barangay Magsaysay, Mapanas, Northern Samar, while the identity of the other CNT is still being confirmed by the authorities.

Seized from the clash site were two M16 rifles, 175 pieces of 5.56 and 87 pieces of M14 ammunition, and five long magazines along with other war materiel. Major General Adonis Ariel G Orio, Commander of the 8ID, lauded the bravery of the troops and emphasized the role of community support in the success of the operation.

“This successful operation against the remnants of the EVRPC following the two successive encounters in Barangay San Isidro, Las Navas, Northern Samar, is a testament to the unwavering commitment, unyielding dedication of the 8ID, and the vital cooperation of the people of Northern Samar. The neutralization of these CNTs brings us closer to our goal of ending local communist armed conflict in the region,” said Maj. Gen. Orio.

In a statement, Brigadier General Carmelito T Pangatungan, Commander, 803rd Infantry (Peacemakers) Brigade, stressed that the sustained deep partnership of the military and the local communities paved the way for the successful operation, and in return will foil the resurgence of the CTG in the communities.

“Under our advocacy “UPOD KITA” NORTEHANON: Unity for Peace, Onwards to Development, we call upon all Nortehanons to unite with us in preserving peace and promoting development. Together, we will end local armed conflict and build a brighter, safer future for the people of Northern Samar,” expressed Brig. Gen. Pangatungan.

Lieutenant Colonel Francis D Rosales, Commanding Officer, 78IB, hails his troops’ determination and stressed the cooperation of the residents for the operational success.

“These series of victories proves that the EVRPC is on their last breath in Northern Samar. The recent encounter has yielded another major downfall to their already crumbling organization. I assure the people of our sustained operational momentum as we will strike without pause until our communities are completely free from their influence,” Lt. Col. Rosales emphasized.

This operational success adds to the series of serious defeats dealt upon the EVRPC in less than a month following the decisive blow which transpired in Barangay San Isidro, Las Navas, Northern Samar on July 31, 2025, where eight CNTs were killed and ten high-powered firearms were seized that significantly degraded the EVRPC’s operational and armed capabilities.

Meanwhile, 8ID further assured the public that it will continue to protect communities from the atrocities of the EVRPC and sustain peace and development efforts in Eastern Visayas.

TACLOBAN CITY – Fourteen agrarian reform beneficiaries organizations (ARBOs) from Leyte, Biliran and Southern Leyte are expected to transform into productive and resilient farmer groups after their leaders undergo a two-day leadership and organizational management training conducted by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) on July 24 to 25 this year in this city.

Emphasizing the importance of the training, Ma. Elsa Veloso, DAR Eastern Visayas Regional Chief Administrative Officer and Capability Building and Technical Assistance (CBTA) lead coordinator under the Support to Parcelization of Lands for Individual Titling (SPLIT) Project, said “Alam po namin na hindi biro ang maging lider o opisyal ng isang organisasyon – maraming responsibilidad, maraming kailangang ayusin, at laging may inaasahang resulta mula sa inyo. The 8ID had been in close coordination with the Local Government Unit of Las Navas to facilitate the preparation for the funeral services following cultural and legal protocols and respect for human dignity.

The seven Communist New People’s Army Terrorists were identified as Richard Jumadiao alias Joban, Communist Leader, Sub-Regional Guerilla Unit (SRGU) Laysan; alias Berbon, Vice Squad Leader, Independent Squad, Regional Guerilla Unit (RGU); Edgar Baselga alias Ali, Squad Leader, Squad 1; Marciano Pecayo alias Lakay; Jinky Senobio alias Sinag, member of Squad 1; alias Desoy; and alias Rico, all were members of the RGU under the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC).

Communist leader, 2 others identified, machine gun seized following back-to-back clashes in N. Samar

identified NPA members

By DPAO, 8ID PA
August 2, 2025

CAMP LUKBAN, Catbalogan City – The 8th Infantry “Stormtroopers” Division confirmed today the identities of the three Communist New People’s Army Terrorists (CNTs) out of the eight CNTs killed, and reported the recovery of another one K3 Light Machine Gun (LMG) and one M16 rifle further yielding a total of ten firearms seized during the two back-to-back engagements yesterday, July 31, 2025, in the hinterlands of Barangay San Isidro, Las Navas, Northern Samar.

The operation was launched after a concerned civilian tipped off military personnel that an armed group was extorting and threatening farmers in the area.

Through the revelation of a Former Rebel, the personalities were identified as Richard Jumadiao alias Joban, Communist-Leader, Sub-Regional Guerilla Unit (SRGU) Laysan, of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC); alias Berbon, Vice Squad Leader, Independent Squad, Regional Guerilla Unit (RGU); and Jinky Senobio alias Sinag, member of Squad 1, RGU, EVRPC.

Jumadiao and his group had been linked to multiple cases of atrocities in Northern Samar. These include a series of ambuscades, extortions, and radicalization of civilians, jeopardizing government projects and initiatives to bring peace and sustainable development in the region.

As the 8ID continues to conduct decisive operations to end the insurgency in Eastern Visayas, the killing of the key personalities and the seizure of multiple high-powered firearms have severely trampled the armed capabilities of the EVRPC.

Major General Adonis Ariel G. Orio, Commander of the Joint Task Force Storm and the 8ID, conveyed his deep gratitude to the civilians whose bravery helped prevent further violence and loss of innocent lives.

“Our troops acted decisively to protect the people, especially those who brought us reliable information that led to the success of this operation. The Communist Terrorist Group’s (CTG) threats to peace and security were met with firm and decisive action, because the people deserve to live a life away from the shadows of insurgency.”

Maj. Gen. Orio also reiterated his commitment to bringing justice and ending the decades-long insurgency that has corrupted Eastern Visayas’s chance of a brighter future.

“There is hope after conflict. As the 8ID Commander, I speak as a comrade and not as an enemy that you must fear and run from. To the remnants of the EVRPC, return to your families, choose peace over violence, and reclaim your future. I guarantee the safety of those who will choose to surrender, and the 8ID will help them reintegrate with dignity and support,” he added.

With the identities now confirmed, the 8ID is coordinating with the Local Government Unit of Las Navas to inform the families and communities concerned, offering a chance for closure and a renewed call for those still in the armed movement to lay down their arms and start a new life in peace.

8ID strikes hard: 8 CNTs killed, 8 firearms seized in N. Samar clashes

northhern samar clashes

By DPAO, 8ID PA
August 1, 2025

CAMP LUKBAN, Catbalogan City – Troops of the 8th Infantry “Stormtroopers” Division delivered a double decisive strikes against the Regional Headquarters (RHQ) of the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC) in two consecutive fierce armed engagements that yielded in eight Communist New People’s Army Terrorists (CNTs) killed and seizure of eight high-powered firearms in the hinterlands of Barangay San Isidro, Las Navas, Northern Samar, July 31, 2025.

The operation was conducted following the information given by a concerned civilian that a group of armed men was conducting extortion and threatening the farmers.

The first firefight erupted at around 2:30 AM, as 8ID troops launched an assault on a heavily- fortified enemy hideout surrounded with International Humanitarian Law (IHL)-banned Anti-Personnel Mines (APMs), this prompted the troops to call for a fire support. The clash yielded an intense exchange of fires, resulting in the death of seven CNTs and seizure of five M16 rifles, one R4 rifle with an attached M203 grenade launcher.

By 10:00 AM, another clash ensued as the reinforcing troops of the 803rd Infantry Brigade tracked down fleeing Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) elements going west of the first encounter site. This second engagement resulted in a 30-minute firefight resulting in the death of one CNT and seizure one R4 rifle.

One of the RHQ, EVRPC’s most heinous acts dates back to October 07, 2022, when they attacked the 8ID troops who were conducting community works at Brgy Dorillo, Jipapad, Eastern Samar that resulted in the wounding of a 10-year-old child; death of two soldiers, and damage of civilian and government properties.

Las Navas Mayor Philbert Tan made an earnest appeal to the remaining CNTs.

Meanwhile, JTF Storm and 8ID Commander Major General Adonis Ariel G Orio attributed the successful operation to the effective cooperation of the residents with the 8ID’s mission to eliminate the insurgency in the region. He emphasized the crucial role played by the residents of formerly conflict-affected communities in achieving this victory.

"We have repeatedly called on them to return to their families, but this group continues to cling to their twisted ideology that has claimed the lives of countless Filipinos. We therefore reaffirm our call to the remaining members of the CTGs, this may be your best chance to lay down your arms, abandon the armed struggle, and return to the fold of the law. We will not stop until Eastern Visayas is free from your acts of terror. We will hit you hard," said Maj. Gen. Orio.
