Secretary Sarmiento visits Calbiga

CAMP LUKBAN, Catbalogan City – The Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), and the 8th Infantry Division, Philippine Army (8ID) strengthened their partnership in advancing the reintegration of Former Rebels (FRs) during Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento’s visit to the Division on August 21.

Secretary Sarmiento met with the 8ID leadership to discuss ways to further improve ongoing efforts for the successful reintegration of Former Rebels through closer coordination, partnership, and collaboration among concerned stakeholders.

The discussions emphasized the importance of providing Former Rebels with sustained support and opportunities to help them rebuild their lives, become productive members of their communities, and contribute to lasting peace and development in Eastern Visayas.

Earlier in the day, Secretary Sarmiento and his delegation visited Saad nga Balay in Calbiga, Samar, where they conducted a consultation with Former Rebels residing in the facility. The engagement provided an opportunity for the FRs to share their experiences, concerns, and aspirations as they transition to civilian life.

During the visit, Secretary Sarmiento also announced OPAPRU’s proposal for the construction of 10 additional housing units at Saad nga Balay to further support the housing needs of Former Rebels.

The consultation underscored the importance of listening directly to the needs of Former Rebels in developing responsive and sustainable interventions that address their concerns and support their transition back to their communities.

The 8ID, in coordination with OPAPRU and other government agencies and stakeholders, continues to support initiatives aimed at facilitating the peaceful transition of Former Rebels and ensuring that their return to civilian life is accompanied by meaningful opportunities for housing, livelihood, and development.

Through sustained collaboration, OPAPRU and the Philippine Army reaffirm their shared commitment to supporting Former Rebels and strengthening the foundations of lasting peace in Eastern Visayas.

The 8ID likewise reiterated its call to the remaining members of the insurgency to lay down their arms and choose the path of peace, assuring them that the government remains committed to providing assistance and opportunities for those who choose to return to the fold of the law and start anew.
